Water-damage is one of the most common issues that phone repair shops see. To help your business repair water-damaged phones, we have created this step-by-step guide!
Step 1: Assessment. First, assess the damage to the phone. This will include determining the extent of the water damage and any other related issues that may need to be addressed. This can be achieved by asking the customer what happened and how long the phone stayed in the water, as well as a visual inspection.
Step 2: Disassemble the Phone. Carefully disassemble the phone to assess the extent of the damage and try to remove everything that is removable. Take note of any visible signs of corrosion or damage to the internal components, and place all the pieces on a towel or napkin.
Step 3: Dry & Clean the Phone. The components of the phone should be dried very carefully to avoid causing any damage. Use a hot air blower to dry the motherboard and remove any moisture from contact with the water. Use home dry cleaner to dry the battery terminals, flex cable, and any other delicate components to prevent rusting. You can leave it to air dry until it is completely dry.
Step 4: Replace Damaged Components. If any components are damaged or corroded, replace them with new ones. This may include the battery, charging port, or other internal components. But BEFORE you conduct the services, inform the customers of the damages and the potential cost of repairing it to see whether they still want to continue with the process.
Step 5: Reassemble & Test the Phone. Once all damaged components have been replaced, and the phone is thoroughly dry, reassemble the phone. Then you should test the phone to ensure that it is functioning properly. Check all functions, including the microphone, speaker, and camera.
Step 6: Return the Phone with Warm Reminders. Once the phone is fully repaired and tested, return it to the owner but also remind them of the potential harm if the phone is dropped in the water again. If you sell waterproof cases in your shop you can recommend they purchase one to protect the phone from future damage.
